“Sports for Disabled” is being implemented by a consortium of 5 European countries (Portugal, Spain, Turkey, Bulgaria and Finland) and is a follow up of a previous pilot project implemented under the Leonardo da Vinci Program with the intention to transfer the innovative results and products to the new participant countries.
The project meant to face the lack of training in the vocational area related to sports and leisure activities for disabled people and the demand which comes from different organisations operating in the sector of sports and leisure activities for disabled people. Entities such as local municipalities, training organisations, enterprises offering special services for disabled or dependent persons, associations for disabled people, etc.
On the one hand “Sports for Disabled” addresses people with low qualifications, who face problems in accessing the labour market. As a result of this project, such people will develop their competences and skills regarding their successful integration in the labour market by doing a job in an area with a great demand of qualified professionals.
On the other hand, it provides opportunities to increase the access of the disabled in activities related to Sports and Leisure.
“Sports for Disabled” is in compliance with the renewed Lisbon Strategy and the priorities addressed to disabled/disadvantaged groups as it will contribute to reducing social exclusion of disadvantage groups who face too many obstacles in the access to employment, education and training.
“Sports for Disabled” is meant to transfer an innovative training book as a result of recognized needs by municipalities, organisations representing disabled people, training organisations, sport associations, etc. and to promote the European dimension of training and education in a sector with strong potential of growth – sports and leisure for disadvantage groups.
To achieve this the partnership will adapt and translate the training book, which already exists in Portuguese, Spanish and English, into three more languages – Bulgarian, Turkish and Finnish. The Book is actually a training curricula which could be used in training of different target groups (people with low qualifications, long-term unemployed, socially-isolated women and young people) to become sports assistant for disabled people.
Project duration is 18 months – from November 2008 till April 2010.
